My Bother and I Had Lots of Fun But Few Toys

posted on 2 January 2011

When I was a child, my imagination was my best toy. My brother and I didn’t have many toys, so we had to make do with what we had. Even wooden toys we saw other kids play with were something we coveted and wished for. The springs of my bed were open - not like the covered box springs that are common today. We would pretend that the underside of the bed was a vehicle and we were the mechanics. Common items like forks, pipe cleaners, or pieces of card board were our tools. Using a piece of paper for a funnel and an empty milk carton, we would change the oil and fill the gas. Once we were finished, we would test the engine. Any small item could be a key. As the engine turned over, we make car sounds. Most of the time, it wasn’t quite right, so we would have to more to get the car running. Once the engine was repaired and purred like a kitten, then we would jump on top, and take her for a test drive. The imagination of a child is a magical thing.
