A pearls necklace is one of those pieces of jewelry that everyone just assumes is expensive. It's like a diamond ring: they don't even bother to look into them because they think that there is no way that they can afford it on their salary. The thing is, like diamonds, there are different types of pearls out there. It's not like you can only get one grade of pearl on your necklace, there are dozens of types, which means that there are dozens of different price ranges as well. Can you buy a top of the line necklace that you'll be paying for for decades? Yes you can. But you can also find a pearl necklace that is a lot more in your price range. You can actually go online to see what types of pearl necklaces are available, as it is your best chance of seeing the full range of necklaces from expensive to cost effective. |

Ever since I had a kid I realized the value of baby swings, especially when I had my eldest child. For some reason, he was quite a difficult kid especially when he reached a few months old. He was often cranky and fussy, even when we feed him he wasn’t readily satisfied. My husband and I usually take turns trying to pacify him especially by cuddling him and although we tried our best and we were dead tired, he was still whiny. Fortunately, my sister lent me my nephew’s old swing and when we tried placing him there and turned on the rocking motion, he immediately stopped and fell asleep. We tried it for a couple of days and the positive effect didn’t wear off, hence, we bought a new unit ourselves. Now, my eldest is already grown up and whenever we are teasing each other, my husband and I couldn’t help bringing up the times when he was causing us a lot of trouble. |

Freshwater pearls come in a wide variety of natural colours ranging from white through tan to grey. The colour depends mostly on the species of mollusk that is used in it’s production. However enhancements to the natural colour are very common and unless it is specifically stated by the seller you can assume that any freshwater pearl jewellery has been at least bleached to remove dark spots of conchiolin that show through the nacre. In recent years more dramatic techniques such as dying and irradiation have been used to produce pearls with very exotic colours like red, green and purple. Pearls are normally named by their shape and so there are baroque pearls which can be any shape, stick pearls, button pearls, tiny seed or rice pearls, round and teardrop pearls. A recent form are blister pearls which are created by attaching a bead or other irritant to the shell of the mollusk and then cutting it out after it has become nacreous. |

I was in Thailand on holiday and was curious to see how cheap the street markets were selling various fashion accessories at. I was in particular looking at tote bags - I saw a really nice pink tote bag there for about 20% of the price I could buy them in the UK. I was astounded - I knew I'd get a deal, but not so cheap. But on closer inspection, I saw that this bag was in fact damaged. In the hubbub of the market, and the pressure sales of the market vendor, it would have been easy to miss the damage though - so no wonder tourists buy up these bags thinking they have a deal. The expression "buy cheap buy twice" certainly applies to this particular bag I was looking at. I felt reassured in a way, I know we pay over the odds in the UK, but at least we have quality control. |

I'm not normally one to venture out of the house and onto the high street at this time of year. I always imagine a throng of people fighting over the scraps in the department stores. However, this year - being rather strapped for cash as I've been - I've felt compelled to hunt for bargains - call it a survival instinct!
And how I was rewarded by doing so - I found great bargains in most of the shops I'd visited. From a lime green bracelet I bought, to a plasma TV - I made savings of over 50% altogether, if I'd bought the very same items just days ago. That equated to two days of work for me! So it saved me a lot of time and money to go to the Christmas sales.
I only wish I'd done this every year - how much could I have saved? |
